David Millar Dies in Canada

Millar YoungSt Lucia Rugby Founder dies in Canada

The local rugby fraternity mourns the loss of one of its founders, Mr. David Millar Crozier Young, who has been credited with being one of the key figures behind the organisation of the sport of rugby on the island. Millar Young was a member of the initial batch of Canadian teachers who taught at the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School. He was attached to the school from 1974 to 1977 where his undying love for rugby saw his immediate involvement in the organisation of the sport among like-minded expatriates, adventurous local athletes and others interested in the game played in heaven.

Millar formed the St Lucia Rugby Football Club in 1974 comprising of an interesting but all too familiar mix of tough 'expats' and fast locals such as Ali Black, Thaddeus Montoute and Castro of Gros Islet. Their games were against sailors from visiting warships and the odd tour to Barbados and Guadeloupe. Some of his wards even went on to play for clubs in Martinique.

His love for the sport was evident when he sought out the new breed of St Lucia players on his return to the island a few years ago. His generosity knew no bound which made him pack a few rugby balls and memorabilia in his luggage to share with the local rugby followers.

Millar Young was a man among men in rugby circles. He made his mark on sports, particularly American Football and Rugby having played in the Canadian Football League (American Football) for sixteen (16) years before crossing over to rugby. As a rugby player, he won many titles for his team and was equally as prolific as an administrator. Among his noted accomplishments were being a Board Member of Rugby Ontario and Rugby Canada. He won the Province of Ontario Achievement Award and was inducted into the Ontario Hall of Fame.

Mr. Millar Young will live on in the hearts and minds of the persons he touched with his outgoing personality and strong desire to succeed. He was a pioneer in his own right and his legacy will continue to strive in their respective parts of the world. We will miss you Millar. God bless.

Millar died on January 31, 2011 and was buried on February 5, 2011. He is survived by his lovely wife Virginia (Gini) Young and children Scott, Neil, Lesley and dog Coco. He was born on February 19, 1938.
